Over het museum
The museum's collection originates in the 18th century, when Tomás Francisco Prieto founded an engraving school in 1771. After his death in 1783, Charles III acquired his drawings, prints, books, coins and medals, which formed the first core of the holdings.
The collection was shown to the public for the first time in 1867, in the building of the former Casa de la Moneda on the Plaza de Colón, during the reign of Isabella II. It remained there until 1964, when it moved to the current site on Calle del Doctor Esquerdo. The holdings have grown through purchases, donations and pieces from the work of the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre itself.
The permanent exhibition is spread over 17 rooms devoted to the history of money: numismatics, philately and pre-philately, banknotes and other means of payment, lottery and games, a historical library, an art collection and machinery from the Fábrica. At present the permanent rooms are closed for renovation works, while the temporary exhibition on the second floor and the shop remain open.
