Over het museum
The Museo das Mariñas opened in 1983 in the former Santo Domingo convent in Betanzos, a building it shares with the Municipal Library and the Municipal Archive. It is a municipal museum that brings together the historic and ethnographic heritage of the Mariñas region and is part of the Network of Interpretation Centres of the Mariñas Coruñesas Biosphere Reserve.
The route begins with the notable historical figures of Betanzos, in a room that preserves Gothic remains of the monastery of San Francisco and an image of Santiago Peregrino (St James the Pilgrim) from the 14th century, considered the oldest in Galicia to depict the apostle as a pilgrim. Sections follow on the archaeology of the region, with pieces from the castros and from the Roman period, on the Middle Ages and heraldry, on the city's mayors and on medals, as well as ethnographic areas on traditional costume and the Rey de Viana ballet, trades, schools, festivals and a tower clock.
Among the collections, the apostolate of the Rubens school, the Rafael Seoane collection and the tapestries and lace of the Jiménez-Cossío collection, on deposit from the foundation of the same name, stand out. At the end of the visit, models show the urban development of Betanzos.
