Over het museum
The Museo de Calatayud was created in 1971 on the initiative of the then Ministry of National Education. Its foundation was the archaeological collection of the Centro de Estudios Bilbilitanos (Bilbilitan Studies Centre), to which were added materials from the excavations of the Roman city of Bílbilis and donations from private individuals. Since 2007 it has occupied the former Carmelite convent, a 17th-century building restored and integrated into a new construction; in 2010 an additional building was opened that considerably expanded the facilities.
It has about 2,600 m² of exhibition space spread over three floors, with no architectural barriers. More than 1,500 pieces are displayed, mainly archaeological, covering the period from prehistory to the present day. They come from the excavations at Calatayud, above all at Bílbilis, and from the collection of the Count of Samitier, and include, on deposit, the coin collection of the Asociación Bilbilis, which focuses on coins minted by this city.
The sculpture section stands out, with the portrait of Emperor Augustus, of which only three other examples are known in Spain, along with pieces of Tiberius, Empress Livia and other members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Roman wall painting is shown through the reconstruction of a lararium and a sacellum. The museum is completed by a section of contemporary art by Bilbilitan authors, such as the García Torcal collection.
