Over het museum

The Museo de Huesca arose from an initiative of the Comisión Provincial de Monumentos to gather the paintings from the suppressed convents of Alto Aragón and from other collections. It was officially founded in 1873 thanks to the impetus of Valentín Carderera, who donated a large part of his private collection and secured the deposit of several canvases from the former Museo de la Trinidad, today the Museo del Prado. Since 1918 it has been state-owned, although its management has been transferred to the Autonomous Community of Aragon.

The original holdings passed in 1846 to the Colegio Mayor de Santiago, and in 1967 they were installed in the current site, the former Universidad Sertoriana building, erected in 1690 by the architect from Huesca Francisco José de Artiga. It has an octagonal plan, a Baroque sandstone portal and an octagonal porticoed courtyard. Beside it survive three rooms of the Palacio de los Reyes de Aragón, examples of late 12th-century secular Romanesque: the Sala de la Campana, the Sala de Doña Petronila and the Salón del Trono.

The museum is organised into two sections, Archaeology and Fine Arts, which together summarise the history of the province of Huesca from prehistory to the 20th century. Its route includes prehistoric, Roman, Visigothic and Andalusi materials, Romanesque and Gothic art, painting from the 16th to the 19th centuries, the Carderera collection, an Egyptian collection and works by Ramón Acín.
