Over het museum

The Museo Diocesano de Jaca is housed in the cloister and ancillary rooms of the cathedral of San Pedro Apóstol, a key building of the High Romanesque. Its museum tradition goes back to 1934, when a first exhibition was organised in the monastery of the Benedictine nuns to display the sarcophagus of the Infanta doña Sancha. In 1963 the Museo de Arte Sacro Diocesano was created in the cathedral cloister, promoted by the parish priest Jesús Auricenea under Bishop Ángel Hidalgo.

The museum officially opened on 22 August 1970 as a museum of medieval sacred art, with the twofold aim of bearing witness to the faith of the people of the diocese and becoming a centre of culture for the Alto Aragón. Its founding collection brings together Romanesque and Gothic works, among them the mural paintings rescued in the 1960s from churches and hermitages in the Pyrenees that were at risk of disappearing. Ramón Gudiol directed the removal and restoration of these works.

After a refurbishment in 1989 that enlarged the rooms, the museum closed in 2003 for the works of the Plan Director and reopened on 9 February 2010, in the Compostelan Holy Year. Today it is one of the leading references for Romanesque mural painting in Spain, with the famous ensemble from Bagüés, and its collection also includes Romanesque carving, capitals from the original cloister, Gothic and modern art, ironwork and goldsmiths' work.
