Over het museum
The Museo del Greco came about through the initiative of the Marquis of Vega-Inclán, who at the beginning of the 20th century recovered a 16th-century house and a Renaissance palace in Toledo's Jewish quarter, close to the site where the painter lived, to create a house museum devoted to his work. A royal order of 1910 accepted the transfer of the building, the board of trustees was established on 27 April that year, and the museum began its existence shortly afterwards. In 1920 the Marquis donated more than forty paintings by Spanish artists.
The building was refurbished in 1921 and was again the subject of interventions in 1950, 1960 and 1990. Between 2006 and March 2011 it remained closed for a new refurbishment, while part of its collections toured Spain in travelling exhibitions. It reopened on 24 March 2011 under its current name, Museo del Greco, which replaced that of Casa Museo del Greco, and with a more prominent role for the work of Luis Tristán.
The collection brings together some twenty paintings by El Greco, among them the Apostolado, considered one of the finest sets that survive, Las lágrimas de San Pedro, the portraits of Diego and Antonio de Covarrubias and the Vista y plano de Toledo. In 2021 a Crucifixion was added, the first work by the painter to enter the museum since 1910. The holdings are completed by the largest group of works by Luis Tristán and pieces by Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, Juan Bautista del Mazo, Sorolla and Raimundo de Madrazo, as well as numerous works on deposit from the Museo del Prado. The museum is attached to the Ministry of Culture.
