Over het museum

The Museo Taller del Moro occupies a main house of the Toledan nobility, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, probably for Lope González Palomeque and Mayor Téllez de Meneses. It later served as a convent and as a stonemasons' workshop (taller de cantería). The State acquired it in 1959 and opened it as a museum in 1963; in 1931 it had already been declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico.

The building's main value is its 14th-century decoration, of Hispano-Muslim origin, with polychrome plasterwork of geometric and plant motifs, Arabic inscriptions, and heraldic and symbolic elements. The plan follows the Andalusi model, with a large rectangular hall flanked by two alcoves, and it retains wooden ceilings.

The museum displays pieces from the building itself and its surroundings, such as a cistern well-head, capitals, a decorative panel, bases, large storage jars (tinajas), an arrocabe (carved beam) and a cornice with five corbels. It is a state-owned museum whose management corresponds to the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha and which depends on the Museo de Santa Cruz; it is next to the Palacio de Fuensalida in Toledo.
