Over het museum

The museum was founded by the sculptor and ethnographer Joxe Ulibarrena Arellano, who opened it in 1964 in Berrioplano. In 1982 his family set up the Fundación Mariscal Pedro de Nabarra to hold and safeguard the collection, and in 1986 the museum moved to Arteta, where it was reopened by José Miguel de Barandiarán. In 2016 it celebrated its 30th anniversary in the Fantikorena house, and in 2017 the Government of Navarre recognised it as a permanent museum collection.

The Fantikorena house was built in 1641 and is an example of seventeenth-century vernacular architecture, with a ground floor and two further floors. The layout, placement and staging of the objects are the work of Ulibarrena (Peralta, 1924 – Uterga, 2020), who died at the age of 96; the project is now carried on by the Ulibarrena-Herce family.

The collection brings together some 8,000 pieces from the former Kingdom of Navarre showing pre-industrial rural life, grouped by trade: livestock, farming, blacksmithing, carpentry, cooperage, shepherding and transhumance, and objects relating to cheese, bread, wine and honey. The route contrasts a primitive seventeenth-century kitchen with an early twentieth-century home.
