Over het museum
The Museo Histórico Municipal de Écija was born from the initiative of a promoting committee of independent citizens, which the town council welcomed. Its creation made it possible to recover for the town the Palacio de Benamejí, a Baroque building of the 18th century declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (protected heritage site).
The museum is conceived as a “city museum” of an essentially archaeological character. The current display, open since March 1999, occupies around 650 m² of permanent exhibition with five archaeology rooms and a route from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The palace follows the Écija model of an entrance courtyard, stables and a large colonnaded courtyard, and has a monumental staircase covered by a dome.
In 2002, during excavations in the Plaza de España, the Wounded Amazon was found, a Roman marble copy of a 5th-century BC Greek original, almost completely preserved and with traces of polychromy. The museum also has a very active temporary exhibition room, an archaeological library with more than 4,000 volumes and a restoration laboratory.
