Over het museum

The Museo Zuloaga occupies the church of San Juan de los Caballeros in Segovia, a Romanesque church of Visigothic origin that was remodelled in the 10th, 11th and 13th centuries, to which an upper floor was added in the Baroque period. The church ceased to be used for worship in 1843 and fell into neglect, although it escaped the demolitions that affected other historic buildings in the city. In 1905 the painter and ceramicist Daniel Zuloaga (1852–1921) bought it and set up his ceramics workshop and his home above the nave.

After the artist's death, the building was declared a Historic Monument (Monumento Histórico) in 1931, and in 1947 it was designated the seat of the Museo Zuloaga, the year the State bought numerous pieces from the family. In 1955 the State also acquired the building and, after several works and remodelling (1962, 1975 and 1996–1997), the museum finally opened in 1998. It is state-owned and managed by the Junta de Castilla y León as a branch of the Museo de Segovia.

The visit allows visitors to see San Juan de los Caballeros itself: the volumes of the building, its construction phases, the architectural decoration, the paintings in the apse, the tombstones and the remains of Zuloaga's workshop and home. Ceramic pieces from that workshop, sketches for architectural decorations, works by Daniel Zuloaga installed in the building since 1905, and paintings by him and by his nephew Ignacio Zuloaga are displayed. Temporary exhibitions are also held on the site.
