Over het museum
The Torreón de Lozoya, on the Plaza de San Martín, is one of the most emblematic civil buildings in Segovia. It is not just a tower but a palatial complex with a courtyard, a second, more modest tower and a garden with a porticoed gallery. Its origins are unclear: it has often been said that it was built over Roman baths, based on the interpretation of remains that appeared during a restoration.
The building is a fortified house with a tower (casa fuerte torreada), a common type in Segovia between the 13th and 15th centuries. The great tower, 25 metres high, gives the complex its name and its entrance, and its façade keeps a sgraffito of tangent circles that is very characteristic of the city. Its exact date is still debated between the 14th and 15th centuries, and the building underwent major reforms in the 16th century. At the end of the 15th century Hernando Cabrera, brother of Andrés Cabrera, is recorded as the owner.
In the 20th century the building was acquired by the Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Segovia, which restored it and turned it into a cultural centre. Today it is run by the Fundación Torreón de Lozoya, which houses its museum there.
The permanent collection brings together a little over a thousand works, mainly from the legacy of the former Caja Segovia, supplemented by donations and deposits from individuals and institutions. There are paintings, coins and medals, sculpture, glass, porcelain, books and ceramics, although contemporary art connected with Segovia and its province predominates. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and allows visitors to climb the tower to view the old town.
