Over het museum
The museum opened in 1961 as the local museum of Vilassar de Dalt. Since 1974 it has occupied part of the ground floor of Can Banús, a former medieval farmhouse transformed over the centuries, which the City Council acquired in 1970 together with the rest of the estate.
The collections grew out of an interest in gathering the heritage of the town. The oldest is the archaeological collection, formed mainly from finds at local sites of the Neolithic, Iberian, Roman and medieval periods. To this are added the textile collection, with machinery and tools rescued from the town's factories, and a historical collection of various objects, such as Gothic windows salvaged from demolitions, craft tools and household utensils.
In 1997 the Arxiu Històric Local was created as a section of the museum to organise and make available the material gathered over decades. The museum also looks after the Roman kilns site of La Fornaca, a complex of three kilns dedicated to producing large ceramic pieces, such as roof tiles, bricks and dolia, dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries.
