Over het museum
The Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya occupies, on Montjuïc, the former Palau d'Arts Gràfiques, built between 1927 and 1929 for the International Exhibition of Barcelona. It was designed by Pelagi Martínez i Paricio and Raimon Duran i Reynals, with a triangular plan around a central hexagonal space covered by a dome reminiscent of Brunelleschi.
The works to adapt the palace into a museum began in early 1931: interior walls were added, the central courtyard was converted into several rooms, a first floor was built for the museum's services, and skylights were opened. The museum opened on 3 November 1935 as the first museum in Barcelona devoted exclusively to archaeology.
The Barcelona venue has undergone several renovations. In 1985 the prehistory rooms were refurbished and the Roman room was created; in 1991 several rooms were remodelled with new displays on the classical, Hispano-Roman and Balearic cultures; between 2006 and 2010 the prehistory area was renewed with contextualised presentations and audiovisual resources; and in 2011 the last major refurbishment took place, with an integrated design aimed at moving from a storage museum to an interpretive one.
The museum is part of a network that also includes Empúries, Girona, Olèrdola and Ullastret.
