Over het museum
The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is housed in the Palau Nacional, a building designed by Eugenio Cendoya, Enric Catà and Pere Domènech i Roura, which opened in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exhibition. Its origins as a museum go back to 1934, when the Museu d'Art de Catalunya was created; the Museu d'Art Modern joined it in 1945.
In 1990 the present museum was established by merging the modern art collections with the medieval art collections. In the 1980s the architect Gae Aulenti was commissioned to adapt the palace for museum use. The extension and reorganisation of the galleries culminated in the opening of the permanent home on 16 December 2004, with new 19th-century galleries and the deposit of the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection.
The collection covers Catalan and European art from the Romanesque period to modern art, with sections on Romanesque and Gothic medieval art, the Renaissance and Baroque, modern art, drawings, prints and posters, photography and numismatics. The 19th-century galleries were completely reorganised in 2014, and in recent years new displays of modern art and of art and the Civil War have opened. As well as the galleries, the museum has a library and terraces with views of Barcelona.

Gratis toegang: Saturdays from 15:00 and the first Sunday of each month (with advance online booking); also on open-day events.
The general ticket (€12) includes the building, the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and the terraces with views, and is valid for two days within the month of purchase. Access is via two ramps on either side of the main door. Most spaces are adapted, and there are lifts and stairlifts operated by staff. The cloakroom lends wheelchairs, folding chairs and pushchairs. There are adapted toilets in the lobby, the Oval Hall and the Library, tactile guiding paths, a tactile model of the building, touch tables with audio description, induction loops and an easy-read visit guide. Visits in Catalan Sign Language are held for some temporary exhibitions. Only accredited guide dogs and assistance dogs are admitted. Contact: accessibilitat@museunacional.cat.

The activity programme includes proposals for family and children’s audiences. There are baby changing facilities and a breastfeeding room in the toilets of the Oval Hall and the lobby, and the cloakroom lends pushchairs.

Paid public car park for cars and coaches next to the museum, with spaces for people with reduced mobility. Vehicles carrying passengers who need special assistance may park in the reserved area at the back of the building, after calling 936 220 375 in advance.

Oval Café in the Oval Hall, La Terrassa del MNAC at the entrance (open to everyone) and Restaurant Absis in the former Throne Room. There are two shops, one outside and one in the Oval Hall. Wi-Fi in the lobby, the Library, the Oval Hall, the Dome Hall, the cafés, the auditoria and the temporary exhibition galleries; it is not stated whether it is free. Bags larger than 35 × 35 × 25 cm must be left in the cloakroom.

The Oval Hall, the Dome, the lobby, the terrace, the Sert Room and Restaurant Absis can be hired, mainly for corporate and cultural events by agencies and brands; requests are made using a form.
