Over het museum

The Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya in Girona grew out of the Museu Provincial d'Antiguitats i Belles Arts, created in 1845 by the Comissió Provincial de Monuments, and it is one of the oldest in Catalonia. In 1857 it was installed in the cloister of the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, which the Benedictine monks had abandoned in 1836 under the disentailment laws (desamortización). In 1860 work began on the upper cloister, where the exhibition rooms are today, but the museum did not open to the public until the end of 1870.

Among the earliest materials are those from the excavations the Comissió de Monuments carried out at Empúries in 1846, and the Roman inscriptions and sculptures found in the city of Gerunda. After the Civil War it became the Provincial Archaeological Museum and also occupied the church, which had until then been a parish church. In 1976, with the creation of the Museu d'Art de Girona, the art collections were moved to the former Palau Episcopal and the museum became specialised in archaeology. In 1992 it passed to the Generalitat de Catalunya and became part of the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya.

The monastery, known since the 10th century, retains only the church and the cloister, built from around 1131 and considered one of the most notable examples of Catalan Romanesque. The church has a three-aisled basilica plan and a rose window almost three and a half metres in diameter; the cloister has sixty capitals with a rich medieval imagery.

The exhibition “El temps de la memòria” (The Time of Memory), which covers the land and underwater heritage of Girona, presents the most important pieces in the collection.
