Over het museum
The Museu de la Pagesia de Castellbisbal was founded in 1985 on the initiative of residents of the municipality who, aware of the gradual disappearance of farming, donated field tools and everyday utensils of rural life to the museum. A reform and modernisation carried out in 2006 gave rise to the current thematic structure.
Castellbisbal is today an industrial and residential municipality, but for centuries it was an agricultural village, with a long tradition of vineyards and market gardens that goes back at least to Roman times. The fertile red soil of the area and its climate shaped that character.
The permanent exhibition offers an overview of more than 900 years of the municipality's farming tradition and is spread over three floors. “The people” is devoted to the everyday life of the traditional family and to the handing down of knowledge and traditions; “The land” brings together the tools needed for each crop and for processing its products; and “Markets and transport” explains the origins of exchange, measurement and payment, as well as the evolution of roads and means of transport. The museum also has a temporary exhibition room and organises workshops, guided tours and cultural activities.
