Over het museum
The Museu Marítim de Barcelona occupies the Drassanes (Atarazanas Reales), one of Europe's best-preserved Gothic shipbuilding complexes. They were built in two phases, between 1283 and 1328 and between 1328 and 1390, and in 1618 the naves of the Generalitat were added. The interior has ten Gothic naves, some about 120 metres long.
The idea of a maritime museum emerged with the Instituto Náutico del Mediterráneo, founded in 1929, whose collections came from the Escuela de Náutica founded in 1769. The museum was formally created in October 1936 and, after the most important pieces were kept safe during the Civil War, opened to the public on 18 January 1941. The Atarazanas were restored between 1957 and 1966 under the direction of Adolf Florensa and were declared a historic-artistic monument in 1962.
In 1993 the Consorcio de las Atarazanas Reales y Museo Marítimo de Barcelona was established. The museum underwent a long renovation between 2009 and 2018 and now presents its collections in a rehabilitated building. Among its best-known pieces are the full-scale replica of Don Juan de Austria's royal galley, 60 metres long, used at the Battle of Lepanto, and a model of the Ictíneo II submarine by Narcís Monturiol. The museum also has the schooner Santa Eulàlia, moored in the port, which is currently not available for visits.
