Vilamuseu

Over het museum

Vilamuseu is the network of museums and monuments of La Vila Joiosa. Its main seat, on Colón street, opened on 9 November 2016; the institution had already been recognised as a museum in 1996, at its previous location. The building, of some 4,500 m², was designed by the architect Tomás Soriano and built in 2015, and it preserves the historicist façade of the former Álvaro Esquerdo school, erected in 1922.

In addition to the main seat, Vilamuseu manages the La Barbera dels Aragonés house-museum and several monuments of the town, such as the Roman funerary tower of Sant Josep, the watchtower of l'Aguiló and the Iberian and Roman sanctuary of La Malladeta. It also houses the Municipal Archaeology Service.

The collections cover ethnography, archaeology, the history of La Vila Joiosa, contemporary art, geology, palaeontology and decorative arts. The exhibitions include one devoted to the Roman shipwreck of Bou Ferrer. The museum defines itself as a social museum and works to remove physical, sensory, cognitive and economic barriers.

Street-level entrance, automatic doors, a public lift with Braille and a goods lift for groups of wheelchair users, always with museum staff. Two wheelchairs and folding chairs are lent free of charge. There are tactile maps with audio description, an induction loop at the information desk and in room A, videos in Spanish Sign Language via QR codes (live interpreting must be requested 15 days in advance) and easy-read texts for two exhibitions. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are admitted.
