Over het museum
Processing iron ore around Loděnice goes back to the Celts in the 4th century BC, and the first written record of mining and processing iron in the Czech Ordovician dates from the 8th century. The greatest expansion of mining took place in the second half of the 19th century. In 1861 entrepreneurs from Kladno obtained permission to explore the deposit at Chrustenice, and two years later two mining fields were granted to them. Surface mining began in 1905 and deep mining in 1908. From 1909 an aerial cableway ran from the mine to the railway station in Loděnice, and the largest amount of ore, almost 281,000 tonnes, was extracted in 1929. After 1945 the mine was nationalised, and mining ended in 1965.
Enthusiasts first explored the underground of the mine in 1992. After the management of the machine works agreed in February 1995, clearing of the galleries began, and fourteen large containers of waste were removed; the entrances were also secured. On 23 June 1995, exactly thirty years after the last wagon left the mine, former miners with their families gathered in the mine and symbolically pushed the first wagon into the adit. Contemporary witnesses handed photographs and personal memorabilia over to the exhibition.
The mine exhibition has been open since June 1997 and is run by the association PŽS – Chrustenická železnorudná šachta. Exhibits in the hundreds of metres of accessible galleries recall the era of mining and quarrying in the surrounding area. A guided tour lasts roughly 50 to 70 minutes, and it is still about 8 °C underground. During selected events, a mine train runs through the underground.
