Over het museum

Dašovský mlýn lies in the hamlet of Dašov near Štěměchy, on the route between Třebíč and Telč. According to oral tradition its history goes back to the time of Charles IV; the first mention of mills near Štěměchy dates from 1386, and there is direct evidence of a mill here from before 1505. A major conversion from the old Czech milling arrangement to a roller mill took place in August 1911.

The family that owns the mill gradually uncovered it and turned it into a museum in their free time. The ceremonial christening with the first load of grain took place on 9 August 2011. In 2012, donations made it possible to restore a waterwheel 4.55 metres in diameter; in 2015 an exhibition about Dr Karel Hobza, the most respected steward of the mill, was added, together with an Art Nouveau pharmacy; at Easter 2024 an exhibition of historical clothing was opened. In 2022 the roof of the mill was replaced, and later the roofs of the farm buildings. The waterwheel is currently out of operation because of its poor technical condition.

The exhibition spans four floors and includes the complete machinery of the roller mill, remnants of the original Czech milling arrangement with Baroque carved columns, flax processing, and thousands of everyday objects, from the kitchen and the children’s bedroom to the laundry. A guided tour with commentary lasts about an hour.
