Over het museum
Dřevěnky na Borku are two log workers’ houses, numbers 116 and 117, in Staré Město in Třinec. They were built in 1878 by the Třinecké železárny (Třinec Ironworks) to designs by the builder Albín Th. Prokop, as part of the Starý Borek colony for their employees. Each house is divided into four identical 32 m² flats with a separate entrance. Each flat had a cellar, a quarter share of the loft, farm outbuildings in a plank shed, and a garden plot for vegetables and small livestock.
The colony was connected to the electricity network in 1919–1921, but residents struggled for a long time with a lack of water and with sewage, which is why they were nicknamed “Baňkoři”. In the early 1970s four of the houses were demolished, and after the new gasholders entered service in 1988, residents moved out gradually for safety reasons. The two surviving houses have been cultural monuments since 2003.
After two years of construction work, the open-air museum opened in December 2023 and began its first tourist season in 2024. House no. 117 houses the visitor facilities, while house no. 116 has four flats furnished to show working-class family life in the 20th century, from the 1920s to the 1990s. The site is part of the Technotrasa tourist route and of the Czech-Polish route Po stopách dřeva, železa a lidí (In the Footsteps of Wood, Iron and People).
