Over het museum
The Horácké muzeum is housed in the old Renaissance town hall, house number 114, on Vratislavovo náměstí in Nové Město na Moravě. The town built the hall in 1555 by converting a purchased house; it was later burned out several times and received its present form after alterations in 1803. Only the Renaissance entrance hall with its stone portal survives from the original building.
The museum was founded in 1892 as the second oldest museum in western Moravia. The basis of the collections was formed by the private collectors Anna Jelínková and the teacher Kristina Letovská. The museum moved into the old town hall in 1907, and the first regular exhibition was opened to the public on 25 October 1908. In 1924 the building was donated to the museum; in 1938 the painter Karel Němec added a sgraffito of the town’s coat of arms to its decoration; in 1989–1994 it underwent a major reconstruction. Since 1 January 2025 the Horácké muzeum and the information centre of the town of Nové Město na Moravě (NMNM) have been an independent contributory organisation of the town.
The exhibitions are devoted to the folk culture of the northern Horácko region, glassmaking, hardware manufacture and above all skiing from the late 19th century to the present, including the production of skis in a carpentry workshop from the First Republic. The museum also includes a First Republic school classroom, an exhibition on the painter Karel Němec, Mlejnek z Víru in the courtyard and, in the summer season, the Strašidelné podzemí (Haunted Underground). Since 13 April 2026 the museum has been closed for the reconstruction of the visitor facilities.
