Over het museum

The Síň rodáků (Hall of Natives) is housed in the Classicist building of the former Catholic school on Jan Karafiát Square in Jimramov. The house was built in 1801 on the orders of Count Antonín Belcredi and served as a school until 1986. After reconstruction, a memorial hall and museum were opened in it in December 1998. The architectural design was prepared by the Brno architect Jan Doležal, and the realisation was carried out by the local cultural commission. In its first year the exhibition was visited by more than a thousand people.

The exhibition is divided into several parts. The central one is devoted to the life and work of Jan Karafiát, the author of the children's book Broučci (The Beetles), who is connected with Jimramov. Another part presents notable natives and personalities associated with the Jimramov area, for example the brothers Alois and Vilém Mrštík, the missionary Karel Slavíček or Bohuslav Kozák. The exhibition includes a diorama of Broučci by Jiří Trnka.

The third part, called Život na Vysočině (Life in the Vysočina Region), describes the traditional way of life in the region and shows a nativity scene (betlém) by a local woodcarver. An audio guide to Jimramov's monuments is available for visitors to borrow.
