Over het museum
The Mayrau Mining Open-Air Museum is located in the preserved area of a hard-coal mine in Vinařice near Kladno and is a branch of the Sládeček Local History Museum in Kladno. It is the only accessible mine complex in the entire Kladno-Rakovník coal basin, where coal was mined for more than two centuries.
The Prague ironworks company began sinking the Mayrau shaft in 1874 and in 1877 reached its final depth of 527 m. The shaft had an unusual circular profile, which is attributed to the works manager Jan Karlík, later the inventor of the tachograph. About ten years later and fifty metres further on, the Robert shaft was sunk. In 1905 the Ringhoffer steam winding engine was installed at the Mayrau shaft; it is still demonstrated in operation. Mining ended in 1997, and a year later both shafts were filled in. Over 120 years of operation about 34 million tonnes of coal were extracted here.
The open-air museum was created in the mine area in 1994. Tours are led by guides, many of whom are former miners, and take place in a model of the last working day: from the guildhouse and the chain-suspended changing rooms to the shaft buildings. The coal-hewing demonstration is offered at a simulated workplace in the Homole adit. The site also hosts exhibitions, educational and cultural events, and films are often shot here.
