Over het museum
The museum in Slaný was founded in 1885 on the initiative of the young teacher and writer Václav Štech (1859–1947), who was supported by many citizens of Slaný. Štech became the first curator and built up an archaeological, ethnographic and historical collection. The museum changed its seat several times; since 1940 it has been housed in the former Piarist college founded by Count Bernard Ignác Martinic, and the college's chapel of the Betrothal of the Virgin Mary has survived as well.
The collections also grew after the Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895, where the Slaný district had its own pavilion, and in the 1920s and 1930s, after the museum took over the collections of the defunct museums in Kolč and Zvoleněves. The basis of the historical collection consists of guild and church objects, and the archaeological collection contains finds from Slánská hora (Slaný Hill) and other sites in the Slaný region.
During the restoration of the chapel in 1997, fragments of frescoes came to light; in 2014 a partial reconstruction took place, in which the atrium was restored, a lift was installed on the main staircase, and the façade and windows were repaired. The museum also includes the Velvarská brána (Velvary Gate) and the Ethnographic Museum of the Slaný Region in Třebíz. In 2025 the museum celebrated 140 years.
