Over het museum
Helfštýn Castle was founded at the beginning of the 14th century, most likely by the lords of Linava. It was significantly extended at the latest at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, when it belonged to the lords of Kravaře. From the last quarter of the 15th century the Pernštejns rebuilt it in the late Gothic style; later the Bruntál-Vrbno family (Bruntálští z Vrbna) lived there, and during their time the extensive Renaissance palace was completed.
At the start of the Thirty Years’ War the castle was briefly occupied by the army of the Estates; later an imperial garrison was stationed there, which withstood two sieges. It was then used by the army, and from the second half of the 18th century it fell into decay. In the mid-19th century the first alterations made the ruin accessible to visitors and allowed cultural events to take place there.
Today the castle is managed by the Comenius Museum in Přerov. The torso of the castle palace was reopened in 2020, and after two hundred years visitors can again reach all of its floors. The castle is also the venue for the annual meeting of the Hefaiston artist blacksmiths, and it houses a unique collection of artistic blacksmithing. The visit also includes an archaeology exhibition and a historical mint in the basement of the Renaissance palace.
