Over het museum

Sovinec Castle was founded between 1329 and 1332 by the brothers Pavel and Vok of the Hrutovič family, who from then on styled themselves “of Sovinec”. The original simple castle, with a cylindrical tower and a palace on the summit of the rock, was later supplemented by a barbican, an outer bailey and, in the late Gothic period, further palaces. The castle changed owners several times; from 1594 it was ruled by the Kobylka z Kobylí family, before it was acquired by the Teutonic Order after the defeat at the Battle of White Mountain.

During the Thirty Years’ War the Order turned it into a modern fortress with three Baroque bastions. In 1643 the Swedes captured it after a siege. After a fire in 1784 and the sale of parts of the site in the early 19th century, the castle became a source of building stone. Later it served as the Order’s seminary, from 1867 as a forestry school, and during the Second World War as a prisoner-of-war camp.

The castle burned down in May 1945. After nationalisation it has been administered by the Bruntál Museum since 1965, and reconstruction continues to this day. The restored rooms house exhibitions on the history of the castle, the forestry school and archaeological finds, and from the tower there is a view of the Sovinec Highlands nature park. Seasonal exhibitions, fencing displays, theatre and concerts take place at the castle.
