Over het museum
The Expozice času (Time Exhibition) in Šternberk opened in November 2011. Šternberk, a long-standing centre of clock manufacturing, thus lived up to its reputation as a town of clocks. The script and realisation were prepared by the studio CreaTeam, and more than twenty Czech and foreign museums lent exhibits, among them the Vlastivědné muzeum v Olomouci (Regional Museum in Olomouc), the Národní technické muzeum (National Technical Museum), the Židovské muzeum v Praze (Jewish Museum in Prague) and the Obuvnické muzeum ve Zlíně (Shoe Museum in Zlín).
The route through the exhibition leads through ten rooms. It tells the story of time, from the origin of the universe through various calendars and ways of measuring time in history, to mechanical, electric and electronic clocks, clocks of unusual shapes and atomic clocks. Visitors can look into a clockmaker’s workshop, play a space game, have themselves photographed with the Hubble telescope, or listen to the Loreto chime (zvonkohra).
The exhibition is housed in one of the oldest houses in Šternberk. The house already stood at the beginning of the 16th century and served in turn as a market hall, an inn, a malthouse, a prison with a torture chamber, a distillery of brandies and liqueurs, and, from 1952, as a cultural house, still called the dům osvěty (House of Enlightenment).
