Over het museum

The South Moravian Museum in Znojmo is one of the oldest museums in southern Moravia. The town museum was founded in 1878, gathered relics of Znojmo's past and opened its first exhibition to the public in 1889. From 1910 the collections were housed in Znojmo Castle, to which they were moved by the curator Anton Vrbka, and in 1920 the museum was given the entire castle together with the Rotunda of St Catherine.

Today the museum is a contributory organisation of the South Moravian Region and manages several sites in Znojmo and the surrounding area. The Minorite monastery is open all year round, with the exhibitions Pravěcí zemědělci (Prehistoric Farmers), Živá příroda Znojemska (Living Nature of the Znojmo Region), Zbraně Orientu (Weapons of the Orient), Černé řemeslo (Black Crafts) and the outdoor exhibition Tichá řeč kamení (The Silent Language of Stones). The House of Art (Dům umění) with sacred art and coins and Alšovka with the central storage facility are also part of the museum. Seasonally, Znojmo Castle, the Rotunda of St Catherine, the ruins of Cornštejn Castle and the memorial to Prokop Diviš are opened.

The collection of Oriental weapons is one of the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic, and the House of Art contains, for example, the wooden Znojmo Madonna from the 1330s.
