Over het museum
The Benedictine monastery in Kladruby was founded in 1115 by Prince Vladislav I in the sparsely settled western border region of Bohemia, near the trade route from Nuremberg through Prague to the Baltic. The monastery took part in founding villages and building roads. In 1233 a monumental late Romanesque basilica was completed and consecrated. At the end of the 14th century the monastery found itself in the middle of a dispute between King Wenceslas IV and the Prague archbishop, in which the vicar general Jan z Pomuku, later Saint John of Nepomuk, perished.
The monastery reached its greatest flourishing under Abbot Maurus Fintzgut, who chose Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel as architect for the rebuilding of the church. From 1711 to 1726 a Baroque-Gothic building was created to his design, with vaults of star-shaped ribs and a massive dome. In 1726 Cosmas Damian Asam painted twenty frescoes in the nave. The new convent was designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.
After the monastery was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II in 1785, the buildings passed to the Windischgrätz family and for a long time served as a brewery and flats, which destroyed many interiors. From 1945 the complex has been state property, and since 1968 it has been managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Today it offers tours of the monastery and of the palace rooms.
