Over het museum
The beginnings of the Unhošť museum are linked to the teacher František Melichar. For the Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague (1895) he gathered old objects and monuments in the surrounding villages; after the exhibition ended, he stored some of them in the school, thus laying the foundation of the collections. In 1912 the town set aside one room in the town hall (house no. 1) for displaying them, and the Městské museum (Municipal Museum) came into being, whose first curator was Melichar.
The collections later changed location several times: during the Second World War they had to vacate the town hall room, after the war they were installed in the school, and in 1951 a new exhibition opened in the former savings bank building. In 1979 the collections risked being transferred to the District Museum in Kladno, but the town released the old town hall building, house no. 1. After building work the museum was solemnly opened in May 1986 as a branch of the Kladno museum, and since December 1991 it has been independent under the town's administration.
Today the museum is housed in the old town hall. On the first floor there is a small local history exhibition; on the ground floor a gallery of short-term exhibitions and the town's information centre. The collection holds over 5,000 objects, among them archaeological finds from Unhošť and its surroundings, guild relics, objects relating to the history of crafts, literature and theatre, paintings by regional artists and documents on the history of the town.
