Over het museum

The Sedlčany museum arose on the initiative of the district ethnographic department, which was established in 1893 in preparation for the Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition. The writer and local history researcher Čeněk Habart then began extensive collecting of relics, and in June 1894 the committee of the District Museum was set up. About two thousand people saw the first small exhibition in 1894. The museum found a permanent home only after 1900, in the building of the hospodářská záložna (Economic Savings Bank), and it was solemnly opened on 16 March 1902.

In 1943 the town was evacuated to make way for an SS training ground, and the collections were stored outside Sedlčany. They returned in 1946, and from 1953 part of them was displayed in a temporary exhibition in the town hall. Later the collections were housed for several years at Červený Hrádek chateau, but after it was returned to its original owner in 1992 they had to move out again.

In 1996 the council decided that the building of the former old town hall at the corner of Tyršova Street and the square would be used for the museum. After reconstruction the first part of the new exhibition opened in 2002, and in 2003 the upper floors with further collections. Since 2004 the museum has also included the library, which doubles as a lecture hall and a research room. The museum is a contributory organisation of the town of Sedlčany.
