Over het museum
Alfons Mucha (1860–1939), a native of Ivančice in South Moravia, became famous in Paris around 1900 for posters of the actress Sarah Bernhardt and became a leading figure of Art Nouveau. After returning to his homeland he created the cycle of twenty monumental paintings “The Slav Epic”, in which he expressed his vision of the kinship of the nations.
After the artist’s death, his family sought to preserve the legacy of his work. In 1992 the Mucha Foundation was therefore established; it was founded by his grandson John Mucha and is now led by his great-grandson Marcus Mucha. The foundation organises exhibitions around the world, and it also stands behind the new Prague museum, which according to its website is the only official museum dedicated to Mucha and supported by his family.
The museum is located in the Savarin Palace on Na Příkopě in the centre of Prague, between Wenceslas Square and Jindřišská Street. The palace is undergoing extensive reconstruction, with a plan to open its gardens to the public as well. The exhibition space in the Baroque palace was designed by the architect Eva Jiřičná. The permanent exhibition is titled “Secese a utopie” (Art Nouveau and Utopia), and in 2025 it first presented selected works from the artist’s family collections, some of which had never been shown in public before.
The exhibition is divided into four circuits: Mucha a jeho domovina (Mucha and His Homeland), le style Mucha a secese (le style Mucha and Art Nouveau), Mucha vizionář (Mucha the Visionary) and Slovanská epopej (The Slav Epic). Besides paintings, posters, drawings, books and photographs, it includes immersive and digital projections. The museum combines originals with lithographs and facsimiles of drawings, and each work is labelled with a caption in Czech and English.
