Over het museum
The House U Černé Matky Boží was designed in 1912 by the 31-year-old architect Josef Gočár for the builder Josef Herbst as a department store. The building, on the corner of Celetná Street and Ovocný trh, replaced a Baroque house and is among the most important works of Czech cubist architecture; it is considered the first cubist house in Prague. It takes its name from a Baroque statue of the Black Madonna with Child from the 17th century, which was moved to the corner of the new building during the reconstruction.
The department store operated only until 1922, after which the interiors were adapted into offices. A thorough reconstruction took place in 1993–1994 to a design by Karel Prager, and in 2002 a café opened on the ground floor. Since 1 July 2010 the house has been a national cultural monument.
The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague rents four floors above the café. The permanent exhibition Czech Cubism is on the second and third floors; another floor is used for short-term themed exhibitions, and the top floor for educational programmes for schools and the public, for example art workshops.
