Over het museum

The beginnings of the museum in Rychnov nad Kněžnou go back to the 1890s, when the Pecl Museum Society was founded. The first exhibitions took place at the Piarist college in 1893 and 1894. The society dissolved in 1907 and the collections passed to the town. After the Second World War they were moved to the nationalised Kolowrat Chateau but for a long time were not accessible to the public. In the 20th century the museum was renamed several times; from 1965 it was called the Muzeum Orlických hor (Orlice Mountains Museum) and gradually took over the collections of closed museums in the surrounding towns.

In the 1990s the depositories and offices moved into the former barracks in Jiráskova Street. After the district offices were abolished in 2003, the founding body became the Hradec Králové Region and the Orlická galerie (Orlice Gallery) was attached to the museum; since then the name Muzeum a galerie Orlických hor has been used. The Plachetka Memorial with its ornithological collection has been accessible in Jiráskova Street since 1999.

The Orlice Gallery on the second floor of Kolowrat Chateau documents Czech fine art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to the present, especially works connected with the Orlické hory and Podorlicko regions. The museum also looks after the Sýpka granary in Rokytnice v Orlických horách and until April 2026 administered the Lace Museum in Vamberk, which is now a separate organisation.
