Over het museum
The museum documents the development of photography and related media from their invention to the present day. It collects photographic plates, films, image recordings on magnetic and optical media, photographs on paper and the equipment that produced them, and it is also interested in how media are used in society, for example in family and amateur photography or in cinema and television. Collections are also created through the museum's own projects, for example “Ostře sledovaný Hrabal” or “Via Lucis 1989–2009”, and through donations from private donors.
It is housed in a former Jesuit college from the end of the 16th century in the historic centre of Jindřichův Hradec. The foundation stone of the college was laid in 1595, and construction was completed in 1616. The army handed the college over to the town in 1995, and after reconstruction it serves the museum; since 2024 the neighbouring Chapel of St Mary Magdalene has also belonged to the museum. The museum is one of the workplaces of the Educational and Cultural Centre of Jindřichův Hradec, which is run by the town.
The permanent exhibitions include in particular the project “Moc médií” (The Power of Media), created in cooperation with the National Technical Museum; a replica of the colour photographic camera of Karel Neubert; the history of the Jesuit college; and the life of the Transylvanian prince Francis II Rákóczi. In addition to photography exhibitions, the museum offers guided tours, courses and workshops for children and adults, a photo studio, a library, a café and, since June 2026, a garden for families with children.
