Over het museum
The complex stands on a rocky spur above the River Nežárka, on the site of an older Slavic stronghold. The stone castle with its round Black Tower and Gothic palace was built at the beginning of the 13th century by the lords of Hradec, one of the largest noble families of the kingdom. From the 16th century it was rebuilt as a Renaissance residence to plans by Italian builders; the Adam Wing, the Spanish Wing, large arcades and the Rondel music pavilion in the garden were added. The Rondel is among the finest examples of Mannerism in Central Europe.
After the Hradec line died out in 1604, the estate passed to the Slavata of Chlum and Košumberk and later to the Černín family of Chudenice. Between 1709 and 1735 the Černíns had the castle chapel remodelled in the Baroque style to a design by František Maxmilián Kaňka, and in the Spanish Wing they built a theatre hall, one of the first chateau halls in Bohemia fitted out specifically for performances. A major fire in 1773 destroyed much of the interiors and collections, and the chateau fell into a long decline.
The Černín family owned the complex until 1945, when it was confiscated. After decades of poor condition, a major reconstruction took place between 1976 and 1993, and the chateau reopened to the public. Today the complex is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Visitors follow several tours: the Renaissance Green Rooms, the Gothic palace with its wall paintings of the Legend of St George, the Black Kitchen and the tower with its viewing platform, and the chateau museum exhibition devoted to the Černín family.
