Over het museum
The Mohyla míru Memorial was built in 1910–1912 in memory of the victims of the Battle of Austerlitz on 2 December 1805. The idea came from Alois Slovák, a priest and teacher from Brno, who wanted to turn the former battlefield into a place of light and a reminder against war. The building was designed by the architect Josef Fanta and financed mainly through public collections and donations. Because of the First World War, the chapel was not consecrated until 1923. Beneath the floor is an ossuary with remains found on the battlefield. Since 2003 the memorial has been owned by the South Moravian Region and is managed by the Muzeum Brněnska.
The museum set up the first exhibition on the battle as early as the 1920s. A modern multimedia exhibition opened in 2005, and in 2010 a partly sunken museum pavilion was added, housing the exhibition Fenomén Austerlitz (The Phenomenon of Austerlitz). It shows how the battle has resonated in literature, music and film, and how the tradition of commemorative events and battle reconstructions developed.
The new permanent exhibition The Battle of the Three Emperors 1805 was ceremonially opened on 2 December 2025. It offers visitors a modern view of the key battle of the Napoleonic Wars, with interactive elements and a rich collection of exhibits. Besides the exhibitions, visitors can see the chapel, observation platforms and a café with a terrace.
