Over het museum

The site of today's chateau was a commandery of the Teutonic Knights at the beginning of the 13th century. Slavkov is first mentioned in 1237 as part of its property. At the end of the 16th century the Kounic family built, on older foundations, a Renaissance chateau with a four-wing plan, arcades and a round tower.

The Baroque reconstruction began at the end of the 17th century under Dominik Ondřej Kounic. The Italian architect Domenico Martinelli designed a residence in Danube Baroque style on a U-shaped plan, and his plan also included the rebuilding of a large part of the town with a new parish church. The Kounic family was one of the important noble families of the Habsburg monarchy. After the family died out, the chateau was taken over by the Hungarian counts Pálffy, and after the war it passed to the state.

The chateau is linked to the Battle of the Three Emperors near Austerlitz in 1805 and to the signing of the armistice in the Historic Hall. It is a national cultural monument and is now owned by the town of Slavkov u Brna. Visitors can see the historic halls with frescoes by Andrea Lanzani, smaller historic salons, an exhibition on judicial torture in the chateau's underground, and temporary exhibitions. The chateau also has a park and museum collections, including Napoleonic items.
