Over het museum
The Muzeum vah (Museum of Scales) grew out of the collecting passion of Miroslav Moravec. He started the collection in 1979, when he was looking for older decorative scales for his kitchen. He bought his first two-pan kitchen scales of the KAMOR brand with a set of brass weights, and by the end of the same year he had seven of them. At first he collected only kitchen scales, but later he began to acquire other types deliberately.
The private museum was opened to the public in Humpolec on 6 June 1998. In 2008 the collection exceeded a thousand scales from various parts of the world. The owner tried to restore regular opening hours from the summer of 2009; today the museum is visited by prior telephone arrangement.
Besides kitchen scales, the collection includes large and small decimal scales, equal-arm balances, steelyards (přezmeny), minting scales (mincíře), postal, shop, pharmacy, laboratory and personal scales. There are also scales for gunpowder, eggs, grain and for fishermen, and a variety of weights. The owner's explanations show how scales reveal the era and the craftsmanship of their makers.
