Over het museum
The castle of Lipnice was founded around 1310 by the Lichtenburgs of the Ronovec line, who financed it from the revenues of the nearby town of Německý Brod; the first mention dates from 1314. In 1316–1319 Jindřich of Lichtenburk pledged it to King John of Luxembourg, and in 1319 it passed to Jindřich of Lipé. From 1436 the estate belonged to Mikuláš Trčka of Lípa, and the family made the castle the centre of its domain; Burian II and his son Jan rebuilt it in the late Gothic style at the beginning of the 16th century.
After the murder of Adam Erdmann Trčka in Cheb in 1634, the family’s property was confiscated. During the Thirty Years’ War the Swedes occupied the castle in 1645, and imperial troops captured it in 1646 after a four-week siege. A devastating fire on 19 September 1869 destroyed the castle and most of the town, and the ruin remained derelict until 1913, when rescue work by a local society began.
The Club of Czechoslovak Tourists acquired the ruin in 1924, secured it and opened a museum there. After restoration the castle became state property in 1953. Today it is maintained by the National Heritage Institute, which corrects unsuitable 20th-century reconstructions and keeps the castle open to visitors. The writer Jaroslav Hašek is also associated with the castle.
