Over het museum
The Memorial to King George of Poděbrady is located in the oldest part of the medieval Poděbrady castle, in the former chapel of the Adoration of the Three Kings. The Gothic wall paintings and hundreds of exhibited objects introduce visitors to the 14th and 15th centuries, when the Poděbrady estate belonged to the lords of Kunštát.
Most of the exhibition is devoted to the life and legacy of the Czech king George of Poděbrady. It recalls his fate, the fates of his descendants and his mark on Czech and regional history. It places particular emphasis on the king’s proposal for an organisation of peace among Christian rulers, an idea that was ahead of its time.
The following section presents the sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch (1845–1901) through dozens of working drafts, competition designs and models, for example of the monument to King George in Poděbrady or of Saint Wenceslas for Wenceslas Square. The tour ends with a lapidarium in the castle cellar, with stone artefacts and early medieval monoxyls (dugout canoes made from tree trunks).
