Over het museum
The Podkrušnohorské Technical Museum grew out of an initiative by members of the Association of North Bohemian Miners, who wanted to set up a mining museum in the north Bohemian brown coal basin. In 1997 they chose the site of the Julius III mine in Kopisty near Most, because it made it possible to combine exhibits on deep mining and open-cast mining. The public benefit company that runs the museum was entered in the commercial register on 17 March 2003, and the first exhibitions opened to the public in 2007.
The Julius III mine was built in the early 1880s, and mining went on there for almost 120 years. Part of the mine is a cultural monument, as it forms a complete ensemble of industrial architecture and technical equipment from the period when brown coal was mined underground. The central exhibit is a steam winding engine from 1891.
The site brings together technical monuments from closed mines and quarries in northern Bohemia. Heavy mining machinery, locomotives and wagons stand outside; inside, visitors can walk through a demonstration brown-coal gallery, an exhibition of the mine rescue service, or a model of the shaft and the Humboldt II colony. The museum also offers a smaller tour on ore mining with a children’s corner.
