Over het museum

The predecessor of today's chateau was a Gothic castle, first mentioned in 1363–1365. At that time its owners called themselves “of Jezero” (z Jezera), and the German name was Eisenberg. In the 16th century the Hochhauser family of Hochhaus rebuilt it as a Renaissance chateau, completed in 1549. After the confiscation of the estate in 1623 it was bought by Vilém the Younger Popel of Lobkowicz. After a fire in 1646 the chateau was restored in Baroque form, completed in 1696; another major fire in 1713 led to further restoration.

The Lobkowicz family lived here until the mid-20th century. During the Second World War the chateau was occupied by the army, and from 1943 it served as a special camp for prominent prisoners, mainly senior French officers. After February 1948 it came under state ownership; the army and other organisations used it, and the building fell into serious disrepair.

In the 1970s and 1980s the chateau was threatened with demolition because of the advancing open-cast brown coal mine. It was saved by the public, geologists and an association founded after 1989 to defend it. In 1996 Martin Lobkowicz donated the chateau to the state, and since then it has been managed by the National Heritage Institute. The interiors are deliberately kept in the condition in which history has preserved them and are not crowded with collections.
