Over het museum
The Litomyšl museum was founded in 1891 and was first housed in the premises of the abolished municipal Realschule. It had a general local-history focus for the town and its surroundings. In 1926 it moved into the spacious Baroque building of the former Piarist grammar school from 1714–1719, where Alois Jirásek once taught, and it reopened to the public there in May 1928. The museum is still housed in the building today.
In 2004 the existing municipal museum became a regional museum with a remit for the Svitavy district, and its founder became the Pardubice Region. In 2012–2014 the building underwent a general reconstruction, which was awarded the Gloria musaealis prize. The new permanent exhibition, “Litomyšl – město kultury a vzdělanosti”, is divided into nine thematic sections, from the archaeology of the castle hill through cabinets of older and modern history, natural-science, technical, geographical and ethnographic cabinets, to collecting and the lapidarium.
Since the 1990s of the 20th century the museum has also operated the Rodný byt Bedřicha Smetany (Birthplace of Bedřich Smetana flat) in the castle brewery, and since November 2016 the Portmoneum – Museum Josefa Váchala. Both of these sites have their own address, opening hours and admission fees.
