Over het museum
Kozel Château is one of the few classicist buildings in the Czech lands that was not created by rebuilding an older residence. It was built on a green meadow and has therefore survived in its original form. It was originally called Waldschloss bei Stiahlau, i.e. Forest Château. It was commissioned by Count Jan Vojtěch Černín z Chudenic, Grand Huntsman of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The main building was designed by the Prague architect Václav Haberditz and completed in 1789.
In the 1790s the count had the château extended with the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a riding hall, a servants’ hall and a stable, according to designs by Ignác Jan Nepomuk Palliardi. Kozel served mainly as a hunting château, accommodating guests during hunts in the surrounding forests, where a star-shaped network of paths was created for parforce hunts. The count and his wife lived permanently in Šťáhlavy.
Today the château is a unique example of a classicist rural residence of the nobility from the late 18th century. It is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) and offers an interior exhibition showing the development of living from the Rococo to the Napoleonic Empire style, a château park and a grounds area that is open all year round.
