Over het museum
The first written mention of mining on the Tolštejn estate dates from 1474. Ten years later the noble Schleinitz family received permission from King Vladislaus to mine across the whole estate. Little ore was found, however. The oldest adit in the area, the St. Christopher adit from 1539, and later other mine workings mainly mined silver-bearing galena and chalcopyrite, but profits remained small. Mining peaked around 1620 and was then severely disrupted by the Thirty Years’ War.
The St. John the Evangelist adit was founded in 1781 by Jan z Edenburku. It did not prove profitable either, and the last attempts at mining in this area ended in 1910. Because it is the best preserved of all the local workings, a local tourism association together with the Horský svaz (Mountain Association) opened it to the public in 1935. At the end of the Second World War the entrance was blocked with an explosive charge.
The adit has been open to the public again since 1995. Visitors walk through an accessible section about 320 metres long, where they can see ore veins, for example with chalcopyrite. The adit is part of the mining complex in Jiřetín pod Jedlovou, which also includes a mining museum in the former rectory and the Údolí Milířky educational trail.
