Over het museum

Abbot Hall was built in 1759 as the family home of Colonel George Wilson of Dallam Tower. After it changed hands several times it was bought in 1897 by Kendal Borough Council, which wanted to turn the grounds into a public park. The house itself was neglected and by the 1950s it faced demolition. A group of local people formed a charitable trust to raise the money needed to save it, and in September 1962 the restored building reopened as an art gallery.

The gallery began without a collection and grew through loans, gifts, funding and important bequests. It is now one of the largest art collections of its kind in the North, with more than half devoted to landscape. It includes over 3,000 works on paper, among them watercolours by J. M. W. Turner and John Ruskin, a strong group of Modern British art with works by Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney and Paula Rego, and paintings by the Cumbrian-born portraitist George Romney. Kurt Schwitters made work in Cumbria in his final years, and this is also represented.

The gallery closed in February 2020 for essential works to the electrics, flood resilience and decoration of the building, which is owned by the local council. It reopened on 20 May 2023 with a new direction centred on landscape, ecology and identity, and it is run by the charity Lakeland Arts together with a learning programme for schools and community groups.
