Over het museum
Sizergh has been the home of the Strickland family for almost 800 years. The oldest part is a defensive tower from the 14th or 15th century, built on land that came to the Stricklands by marriage in 1239. In 1336 Edward III allowed Sir Walter Strickland to enclose the land as a private park. The house grew in Elizabethan times, when rooms with fine carved panelling and heraldic glass were added, and the Great Hall was altered in the Georgian style around 1770.
The Stricklands stayed Catholic and loyal to the Stuart kings. Sir Thomas Strickland went into exile with James II, and the house still holds Jacobite relics and portraits of the exiled Stuart family. Over 2,400 objects survive, including family portraits by George Romney and a set of Flemish tapestries in the library that is the largest of its kind in the world. The Inlaid Chamber, a room with elaborate inlaid panelling, was sold to the Victoria and Albert Museum in the 1890s and returned to Sizergh on loan in 1999.
In 1950 Lieutenant Commander Thomas Hornyold-Strickland gave the estate to the National Trust, and members of the family still live in part of the house. The gardens include a lake, a kitchen garden and a rock garden built in the 1920s, which is the largest limestone rock garden in the Trust's care, as well as part of the national collection of ferns.
