Over het museum
Brownlow House, also known as Lurgan Castle, was built in 1833 for Charles Brownlow. During the First World War it served as a troop headquarters for Irish regiments, and in the Second World War it became the headquarters of American forces in Northern Ireland, with the US 5th Army Corps based there from 1942.
The basement still holds well-preserved wartime graffiti. It now forms part of an interactive exhibition, shown under the name Brownlow HQ, that tells the story of the American troops in Lurgan and the surrounding area. The exhibition was organised by the Friends of Brownlow House with funding from the local borough council.
The house also has a tea room and is looked after by the Friends of Brownlow House, who restored it after a serious arson attack in the 1990s.
